Location
South of the Loire, 20 km from Angers, the 80-hectare appellation area is located in a small part of a single commune on the right bank of the Layon: Thouarcé. The appellation extends over the steep slopes of its hillsides: "Les Melleresses", "Beauregard", "La Montagne", "Les Hauts Fleuris" and "Fesles". To the north of these three delineated hillsides lies a gently undulating plateau, with an average altitude of 90 metres, while the Layon river flows at an altitude of 29 metres.
Things to remember
Chenin: Chenin produces fine, elegant wines with a liveliness or freshness due to its natural acidity, and a complexity due to its broad aromatic palette. Particularly sensitive to its terroir, the vintage effect and, of course, the talent of its winemaker, it seems to have a vocation or predestination: "never tire, always surprise". A true "passeur de terroir", each sip reveals the history and richness of the soils of which it is the faithful ambassador!
Botrytis: Botrytis cinerea, or noble rot, is a fungus that develops on ripe grapes in conditions of morning mist and sunshine. It concentrates sugars and aromas, producing sweet wines with complex flavors of honey, candied fruit and spices, typical of grands moelleux.
Favorable climate and terroir: Anjou's climate is temperate oceanic, influenced by the Loire and Layon rivers. The terroir is characterized by schist, sandstone and clay soils, which favor slow ripening of the grapes. Morning mists, combined with good sunshine, favor the development of noble rot (Botrytis cinerea), essential for concentrating sugars and aromas in the grapes.
.Bonnezeaux wines are renowned for their remarkable ageing potential. Thanks to their balance of sugar and acidity, these wines can age for decades, developing exceptional complexity and depth over time, making them highly prized by collectors and grand cru enthusiasts.
