The styles

of Loire Wines

It is the styles of Loire wines that give them their character: tannic red, mellow white, dry or sweet, fruity or mineral.

All you need to know and understand about wine styles

Honored for their elegance and subtle freshness, Loire wines offer an eclectic palette of tastes. They come in a variety of styles: mineral, round, tannic, aromatic... choose yours

[Dry white wines] fresh and elegant

It is undoubtedly in the repertoire of white wines that the Loire best asserts the diversity of its style. If you appreciate refined dry white wines, the whites of Anjou-Saumur will seduce you with their freshness and fine balance, with notably Anjou blanc, Saumur blanc,...

In the lands of Vouvray and Chinon, chenin expresses its potential to delight lovers of refined whites. Speaking of refinement, Savennières and Savennières Roche-aux-Moines are in the league of great white wines.

Touraine, notably Touraine Chenonceaux and Touraine Oisly, also expresses this Loire elegance with a combination of fruit and floral finesse.

[Dry white wines] lively and aromatic

Dry white wines with an aromatic profile offer an intense taste experience. Easily recognized by its citrus and iodized aromas on the palate, Muscadet is equally at home as an aperitif or with seafood. The lively Muscadets Coteaux de la Loire and Sèvre-et-Maine, for example, reveal beautiful acidic and saline notes that will awaken your palate.

The Touraine sauvignon is a powerful aromatic white with a delicate mouthfeel, which marries perfectly with cheese. The Jasnières, with its perfect balance between liveliness and roundness is an exceptional wine for laying down. The coteaux du Loir, delicate and mineral.

[Sweet and syrupy wines] round and greedy

Perfect as an aperitif or to accompany a dessert, sweet Loire wines provide real indulgence, without forgetting freshness since we stay on the fruit. Among the best-known are Coteaux du Layon, Quarts de Chaume Grand Cru and Vouvray, while more confidential appellations include Coteaux de l'Aubance, Bonnezeaux and Coteaux de Saumur. To the eye, Loire moelleux and liquoreux wines are recognizable by their pale to intense gold color, depending on their vintage.

On the nose, aromas of candied fruit, quince, acacia flower and honey predominate. On the palate, these wines reveal a lovely roundness, marked by a persistent finish. Velvet on your palate!

Good to know:The difference between moelleux and liquoreux lies in the presence of residual sugar. There's more of it in liquoreux than in moelleux. Sweet wines are sometimes referred to as nectar.

[Dry white wines] rich and expressive

Rich, expressive dry white wines offer a wide variety of flavors that unfold over time. Their full, round texture is accompanied by a generous aromatic palette, with fruity and floral notes that enchant the senses. Each sip reveals a new facet, creating a pleasurable and refined taste experience.

[Sparkling wines] Relaxed fine bubbles

Also known as vins effervescents or fines bulles, Loire sparkling wines are made by blending several grape varieties in the case of Crémant de Loire, Saumur, Touraine and Anjou, or by using a single grape variety in the case of Vouvray, for example. Produced according to the rules of the traditional method, the fine bubbles are marked by the typicity of Loire wines: a fine balance between freshness and fruit.

In the mouth, the bubbles are finely sparkling. The aromatic profile of Loire bubbles is often based on well-controlled acidity, with hints of citrus fruit and sometimes a brioche flavour for gourmandise... In short, Loire fine bubbles are lively, round, fruity wines... and they go well with all occasions without any complex.

[Red wines] light and fruity

Once again, the red wines of the Loire offer a diverse palette in terms of wine structure and aromas... This richness means they can accompany any epicurean moment: from aperitif to dessert. Mainly made from the emblematic Cabernet Franc grape variety, Loire reds are also produced from Côt (Malbec), Gamay, Pinot d'Aunis, Pinot Noir, Grolleau, Cabernet Sauvignon... Lovers of fruity wines will find something to please their palate among the Loire reds, with Saumur-Champigny, with its supple tannins, and Saint-Nicolas de Bourgueil, with its red fruit aromas.

In the Touraine part of the vineyard, there are also fine expressions of lightness and finesse in the Touraine AOC and its denominations.

[Red wines] powerful and tannic

The red wines of the Loire are renowned for their balance and freshness, but some terroirs express more power. In Chinon, Bourgueil or Anjou, you'll find full-bodied, well-balanced wines.

Their long finish makes them the perfect accompaniment to dishes with character: grilled or roasted red meats, stewed dishes with intense flavours (such as coq au vin or beef stew) or mature hard cheeses such as comté and vieux cantal.

Anjou Brissac, for example, is a perfect illustration of this typicality, with its strong tannic structure and deep aromatic palette combining black fruit, liquorice and hints of wood. The wines of Chinon and Bourgueil, made mainly from Cabernet Franc, also offer great intensity, with silky tannins and great persistence on the palate, while certain Saumur cuvées play on finesse and power, with a long, harmonious finish.

Dry rosés

Dry rosés are light, refreshing wines, perfect for accompanying an aperitif or sublimating world cuisine. Their low sweetness means they can be paired with a wide variety of dishes, from seafood to grilled meats to mixed salads. With their fruity notes and liveliness, they offer a balanced, thirst-quenching tasting experience. Rosé de Loire, for example, seduces with its freshness and aromas of red and exotic fruits, while Saumur Rosé will surprise you with its roundness without sweetness and its finesse.

[Tender rosés]

Tender rosés, also known as demi-sec, combine sweetness and softness with freshness. Their aromas of red berries, citrus fruit and flowers give them a delicate, expressive character. Supple and harmonious, they are smooth and velvety on the palate, with a slightly acidic finish that adds balance and liveliness.

The Rosé d'Anjou is a perfect illustration of this typicality, with its notes of raspberry, morello cherry and English candy, as well as its subtle perlage that prolongs the sensation of freshness. Cabernet d'Anjou, a soft rosé that is emblematic of the Loire region, seduces with its balance between sweetness and freshness, offering a rich and persistent aromatic palette.
