Cabernet Franc

Nantais / Anjou-Saumur / Touraine / Vallée du Loir / Haut-Poitou

Cabernet Franc is a red grape variety of French origin, widely cultivated in the Loire region for centuries. It is particularly well adapted to the region's cooler climate.

General features

Although originally from Bordeaux, it has integrated perfectly into the Loire Valley, producing elegant red wines and fruity rosés. Cabernet Franc produces light to medium-bodied red wines with supple tannins and lively acidity. It is known for its aromas of red and black fruits, as well as herbaceous and spicy notes, which give it great complexity.

Did you know?

Cultivated since the 11th century, this grape variety was introduced to the region by the monks of Bourgueil Abbey. Back then, they called it "Bouchet", and it was already appreciated for its robustness and ability to produce elegant wines even in cooler climates.

Cabernet Franc is in fact the father of the famous Cabernet Sauvignon (with Sauvignon Blanc as its other parent), making it a grape with a prestigious heritage. In the Loire, it has found its ideal terroir in appellations such as Chinon, Saumur-Champigny and Bourgueil, where it produces fine, fragrant red wines, often with aromas of raspberry, bell pepper and violet.
